Biography

Andrew J. Stasik painter, educator, printmaker, and art dealer was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey March 16, 1932. Stasik first studied at New York University before receiving a B.A. degree in 1954 from Columbia University. He studied temporarily at the State University of Iowa before earning his M.F.A. degree at Ohio University in 1956.

            Stasik taught at the New School for Social Research; Ohio University; Ball State Teachers College; Pratt Graphic Arts Center, Pratt Institute; Yale University; University of Florida; University of Pennsylvania; and the University of Calgary before transitioning from being an educator to a member of the editorial staff for the Artist's Proof, the annual of prints and printmaking, published by the Pratt Institute.  

            He had numerous solo exhibitions all over the world including Austria, Norway, Sweden, Yugoslavia, Japan, Canada, and the United States. Stasik also appeared in group exhibitions in Venezuela, Chile, Taiwan, United States, Yugoslavia, and Poland. Stasik travelled extensively throughout Europe and Asia on a number of grants, most prominent of which was the Tiffany Foundation Grant for Printmaking.

            Stasik was Director of exhibitions for the Pratt Institute from 1966 until 1985. Within this period he founded and served as editor for Print Review from 1972 until 1976. Additionally Stasik was on the Board of Directors for the National Print Council of the United States. In 1995 Andrew Stasik, Michael Costello, and Grace Shanley founded the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CCP) in Norwalk, Connecticut. Dedicated to the art of the print, the CCP is a nonprofit multimedia studio and gallery.

            The works of Andrew Stasik can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Cincinnati Art Museum; The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; Library of Congress, Washington, DC; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Cleveland Museum of Art; Oakland Museum of Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Pasadena Museum of California Art; Union of Plastic Artist, Bucharest, Romania; Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary; National Museum, Krakow, Poland; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the American Art Museum, Smithsonian, Washington, DC; Spencer Collection, New York Public Library; Stedelijd Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands; and the National Museum, Warsaw, Poland.

            Stasik said regarding his work: "The subjects, objects, or, if you prefer, themes and feelings which make up my work are a personalized handling of my experiences, real or otherwise -- I feel an empathy for the earth and sky, growth, procreation, feelings of birth, joy, calm, serenity and nostalgia."
