Biography

Oscar Bojesen, painter, printmaker, and illustrator, was born on 28 January 1879 to Thyra Valborg Fylla Rønsholdt and Ernst Bojesen in Copenhagen. His father was a well-known Danish publisher and his brother, Kay Bojesen, became an influential designer.

Bojesen studied painting with Bernhard Schrøder and was enrolled at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen from May 1895 to May 1900. He also studied with the Danish painter and sculptor Laurits Tuxen between 1902 and 1903 and, in 1911, with the Danish painter and lithographer Johan Rohde. Bojesen was primarily a watercolorist but he also worked in woodcut and lithography.

Bojesen’s debut exhibition took place in 1905. His work was included in seventeen of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions beginning in 1907. These exhibitions were held at the Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen and introduced new works by Danish artists. In 1929, he was included in The International Lithograph Exhibition at the Kunstindustrimuseum which showcased contemporary graphic art from around the world.

As to his illustration work, Bojesen created illustrations for the 1910 version of Nils Holgerssen’s Wonderful Journey Through Sweden, a work of fiction by author Selma Langerlöf. He also made drawing for the illustrated newspaper of the day.

The work of Oscar Bojesen is represented in the collection of the British Museum, London.
