San Francisco Bay Area based photographer Mimi Jacobs was known for her portraits of artists and prominent public figures. Jacobs had experimented with sculpture and pottery throughout her life before discovering, and committing herself to, photography at the age of 61. She exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Additionally, a traveling exhibit that paired Jacobs' portraits with works by the artists themselves culminated in the publication of "50 West Coast Artists: a Critical Selection of Painters and Sculptors Working in California" (Chronicle Books, 1981). Jacobs died in San Rafael in 1999.
