Painter and printmaker Carlos del Toro Orihuela was born in Havana, Cuba in 1954. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, San Alejandro, where he graduated in 1975. He then enrolled in the Instituto Superior de Arte, where he graduated with a masters degree in printmaking in 1984. He helped establish the Experimental Graphic Workshop in Havana, which has since become a leading printmaking workshop with an international reputation. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Cabinet of Prints, National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba; Cabinet of Prints Experimental Graphic Workshop, Hav., CU; Schraine Museum, Ludwig Foundation, Cologne, Germany; National Culture House Collection, Quito, Ecuador; the Latin American Studies Center, New York, USA; and the FENIX Foundation, Stockholm, Sweden, among others.
He was awarded second prize for printmaking at the VIII Annual National Young Salon at the Museo Nacional de Bella Artes, Havana, 1982; the Literature in Visual Arts award from Sala Ruden Martinez Villena, Galeria UNEAC, 1982; First Prize, Raul Gomez Garcia Salon, Havana, 1985; medal in printmaking, 25th Anniversary of the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana, 1989; the Oswaldo Guayasamin Museum prize, 1993; the Encuentro de Grabado from Centro Provincial de Artes Plasticas y Diseno, 1993; First Mention, Graphic Biennial Barranquilla, Colombia, 1995; Distinction for National Culture prize, 2002; Order Raul Gomez Garcia, Union of Culture, Cuba, 2002.
