Printmaker Ian Colverson was born in London, England in 1940. He graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1962, and traveled to Rome and Paris on scholarships. He came to the United States where he taught at the Univeristy of California, Los Angeles, a place he would return several times thoughout his career, while on sabaticals, before returning to England.

He has exhibited in London and Lisbon, participating in the Print Biennale at Bradford College. In 1969, he took up a position as founding director of the printmaking department (known as the Department of Two Dimensional Studies) at the Regional College of Art at Bradford College, a position he held until his retirement in 2005. He continues to work and exhibit in the UK.
