Biography

James P. Doversberger was born in Tipton County, Indiana, on November 28, 1928. After graduating from Tipton High School he enlisted with the Navy, and upon his return enrolled at the John Herron School Art School in Indianapolis, where he received his Masters of Fine Arts in painting. He eventually taught art at the Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis. Dovensberger showed at the Hoosier Salon in the 1960s, as well as the Indiana Artists at Herron, Michi-ana, Fort Wayne Art Exhibition, Indiana Artists Club, Hoosier Salon, Art for Religion, 50 Indiana Prints, Indiana State Fair, and the Norfolk (Va.) Art Exhibition, among others. Solo exhibition include Glenville (W. Va.) State Teachers College, Charles Street Theater, Boston, Booth Tarkington Civic Theater, Morris Street Players Theater, H. Lieber Company, Jewish Community Center, Orchard School, and his work has been included in traveling shows sponsored by Art for Religion and 1444 Gallery. Currently, some of his work is included in the collection at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He passed away on October 12, 2017.
