The only information found on the California-born artist Rose Campbell, also known as Rose Campbell-Gerke, is her listing in the National Gallery of Art with only a birth year; our addition of a death "date" is meant only to account for the era in which she lived. She was employed as an artist for the Index of American Design, a project that catalogued American crafts throughout the U.S. using funds from the Works Progress Administration. It appears that she created several dozen - if not hundreds - of highly detailed paintings of handicrafts and folk arts for the catalogue. While the project was never fully completed, her work is a staple in the National Gallery's collection of finalized works.
