Using a variety of inked and uninked materials on the matrix, Bernd Kroeber achieves a layered effect in an otherwise flat composition, lending a Primitive feel to this joyous underwater image. As if we are viewing the scene from the bottom of the ocean ourselves, Krober has made it appear as though we are looking upward toward the sky, with white sunlight filtering through a carnival of fish, kelp, and other plantlife; in the center of the image, the silhouette of a bird is caught in the light.
