A sweeping view from one of San Francisco’s historic “Seven Hills,” Telegraph Hill, looking toward the East Bay, with boats on the water and clouds in the sky. Of note is the comparative space surrounding the wooden houses on the right of the image, a rickety wooden fence running between them and an as-yet undeveloped plot of land; as we know now, such space is hard to find in modern day San Francisco. Winkler’s expert ability to render such vast views with an easy, deft hand is on full display in this small window on to one his favorite subjects, views of and from Telegraph.
