An image of Saint Mary’s Church in Gdansk (then called Danzig), Poland, as seen from Piwna Street (then known as Jopengasse). This was a popular vantage point for artists and photographers at the turn of the 20th century, highlighting not only the dramatic facade of the church but the varied and elegant architecture of the buildings lining the street.
During World War II, much of the church was destroyed, and its main structure wasn’t rebuilt until around 1955; renovations continue to this day. Arthur Bendrat’s image serves as a time capsule of pre-World War(s) Poland.
