Though very little information is found on the life of the young painter Alfred C. Rodriguez, who died at age 28 in 1890 from tuberculosis, many examples of his work can be found online. Classically trained and seemingly well traveled, his style evolved at the dawn of Impressionism in Europe and in some compositions his work shows hints of Symbolism. Despite clear talent, his untimely death came before he was able to build an extensive reputation; his remaining work is left to bear witness to his life.
Here, Rodriguez depicts a sunny day by the sea, with a traditional Portuguese arte xávega fishing boat at the center, figures gathered around to inspect the day's catch. A simple yet charming composition, it honors the artistry of the boat itself as well as the sense of community found in 19th century fishing villages.
