Description
Before she married photographer Bill Quandt, Elizabeth - who was English and living in Oxfordshire - was married to American William Mailliard, with whom she would eventually move to San Francisco, CA, and she signed her early works simply "Mailliard". This piece foreshadows the trajectory of her entire body of work, and specifically inspired other, printed works. In 1969 she would execute an etching of this same scene with slight differences - the doors are open, there is no broken screen, and the planks of the walkway stretch evenly across of the thresholds of each doorway. But all of the hallmarks of her subtle, haunting style remain: strangely mirrored exteriors, uniform but somehow still askew, intriguing to the viewer.
