Richard Florsheim was known for his depictions of electric lights as seen in nature, casting the glow of human innovation on what is already established in the outside world and lending a new perspective on beauty for the viewer to consider.
In the black and white lithograph “Inlet” we see not only the illumination of a pier and ship but also of the night sky and the surface of the sea. A familiar sight to many who live near marinas and harbors is the effect of manmade lights on what is normally shrouded in darkness when the sun has gone down, and Florsheim, using a Modernist, stylized approach, captures it with aplomb.
