"Spice Merchant" is from portfolio of 10 stone lithographs titled "The Great Human Race", images that depict five traders and five merchants, published by the artist and Roy Oliver at Chrysalis Publishing. The artist worked with Master Printers at Roland Posaka's Fishy Whale Press in Rockford, Illinois.
A critic commented about the portfolio: "John L. Doyle's art reflects his fascination with the human condition. For over a decade, previous to creating the art displayed below, Doyle studied in ethnology and anthropology. The product of this study is the visual recording of what he learned, set down in drawings. The drawings became the foundation for lithograph series' which developed into a life's work project, Doyle calls The Great Human Race. This visual recording is a categorical statement about civilization."
