Julian E. Levi had spent four years in Paris between 1920 and 1924 and again in 1926 and 27 and had made the acquaintance of a number of the Surrealists and abstract painters of the time.
This impression is an uneditioned proof, printed at the Art Students League in the 1950s. It was purchased directly from the Art Students League when they deaccessioned duplicates from their collection.
Levi is sometimes confused with New York gallery owner Julian Levy who exhibited a number of the Surrealists.
