Description
Bothwell traveled extensively throughout her life, garnering inspiration from the many places she visited. She was living in Paris between the years 1949 and 1951 and had probably visited Mallorca during that time. Having participated in the mural and printmaking divisions of the WPA in the 1930s, she discovered a love of screenprinting, and it became a primary medium throughout her career. Bothwell combined complex abstract compositions with the technique that, at that point, was more often used for simpler, commercial design. Whether figurative or abstract, Bothwell's work is saturated with color and elements of surrealism. Purity and mystery, narrative and non-objectivity coexist in her compositions in all media.
