Description
This woodcut, used in this case as a poster for an exhibition, was carved on a large, rough block of wood, probably a cutting board. Printed under high pressure, it has a pronounced relief.
Frasconi began an apprenticeship at a local printmaker's shop at age 12, and in the 1940s he began experimenting with woodcuts. Inspired by the prints of Heckel and Grosz, he soon thereafter began publishing his cartoons in satirical newspapers. By the 1950s he had become widely recognized as a leading graphic artist, especially in woodblock printing.
