The thread of connection in the works of Christian Fossier can be found in the sumptuous weight, depth, and precision of each image, communicating stunning dimensionality on the flat surface of the plate. In Untitled II, the unidentified object is wrought in shadow and light like a steel sculpture. The overall shape is seemingly poured into a precisely wrought mold, pooling in the lower corners in velveteen aquatint; and from the black ink he draws out the delicate texture of brushed metal using etching. A mysteriousness lies beneath each subject, at once mechanical, cinematic, and erotic.
Christian Fossier was born in Paris on September 9, 1943. He worked as an art professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Artz in Metz 1977 to 1981, and as professor-workshop (engraving) at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des beaux-Arts in Paris (ENSBA) from 1987 to 1993. He exhibited at Galerie Lahumière which had "strengthened its commitment to geometric and 'constructed' abstraction. It represents not only historic artists within this movement...but also contemporary and vanguard artists."
