Rudolf Moller tackles the difficult subject of lions feasting on their prey, discarding sentimentality and decoration for the literal narrative, complete with viscera and bones. In doing so, however, he captures the primal energy of nature, focusing on the musculature and stance of the large cats using short, expressive strokes, never lingering on one aspect for too long, nearly sketch-like in composition.
This image is a departure for Moller, whose most recognizable body of work exhibits a Fauvist influence with minimal lines and bold fields of color.
