Malaquias Montoya's "End the Blockade" is, on the surface, an homage to the Nicaraguan civil war of 1926-27. However, with its red-starred fatigue cap, it more widely acknowledges the struggles of several South American countries throughout the 20th century and was produced near the end of one the most violent eras of conflict in Nicaragua, dubbed the Contra War, that took place from 1981-1989.
The wide brimmed hats of the Sandinistas and the Red Star worn by Che Guevara remain symbols of resistance throughout South America and the world. A screenprint of similar ilk produced by Montoya in 1979 was published in November, 2016, in a New York Times article on the art of Fidel Castro's revolution.
