Description
Mission Dolores (Mission San Francisco de Asis) was founded by Lieutenant Jose Joaquin Moraga and Father Francisco Palou in 1776. It is the sixth in the chain of missions in California and is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco. Dedicated in 1791, the present church still functions as an important community and religious center. The façade has remained virtually untouched since it was built. The location for the mission was selected based upon its proximity to the Arroyo de los Dolores. Pollak added a remarque, a small drawing, in the lower margin of a covered wagon on a trail. See our link to the artist's biography above.
