Description
Dublin entrepreneur William Mervin Lawrence opened Lawrence Studios in 1865. He employed photographers-- in particluar, Robert French--, printers, and artists to record the length and breadth of Ireland in a collection of nearly 40,000 negatives and 15,000 printed images. In 1916 the studio was looted and burned down during the Easter Rising; though nearly all of the studio's projects were destroyed, the negatives from this collection were stored elsewhere and survived. The studio shut down in 1942. The Lawrence Collection remains one of the most important compilations of images of the Irish landscape.
