Description
This is a hand colored aquatint by James A. Merigot and was published by Merigot and Robert Edwards (1768-1827) in London in 1798 as a portfolio titled: "A SELECT COLLECTION OF VIEWS AND RUINS IN ROME AND ITS VICINITY; EXECUTED FROM DRAWINGS MADE UPON THE SPOT IN THE YEAR 1791" The portfolio consisted of 59 plates, printed on J. Whatman paper. Each image has a typeset title and the publication line, which in this case, reads: "London, Published Feb'y 20th 1793 by R. Edwards 142 New Bond Street & I. Merigot No 28, Hay market." This is the tomb of St. Helen, mother of Constantine the Great in via Casilina which stood by the entrance of a Christian catacomb. Within the interior is a church, Santi Marcellin e Pietro, built in the early 17th century.
