Description
This is a hand colored aquatint by James A. Merigot and was published by Merigot and Robert Edwards (1768-1827) in London in 1798 as a portfolio titled: "A SELECT COLLECTION OF VIEWS AND RUINS IN ROME AND ITS VICINITY; EXECUTED FROM DRAWINGS MADE UPON THE SPOT IN THE YEAR 1791" The portfolio consisted of 59 plates, printed on J. Whatman paper. Each image has a typeset title and the publication line, which in this case, reads: "London, Pub’d March 28th 1798 by J. Merigot No 28 Haymarket, & R. Edwards 142 New Bond Street.” This is the Ponte Clementino, an 18th century viaduct built in the town of Civita Castellana in the Italian province of Viterbo, near Mount Soracte. The town was rebuilt during the Middle Ages, around 994 AD.
