Description
Cora Boone is best known for the single-block woodcut technique she learned from Blanche Lazzell in Provincetown around 1920 and taught it to other artists and teachers in California. Boone was also an accomplished watercolorist, studying with Leonard Richmond between 1912 and 1913 at the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London and with Jeka Kemp in Paris. "Summer Flowers" was exhibited in the Art Gallery of the California State Fair in Sacramento and the Third Exhibition of Artist Members of the National League of American Pen Women held in New York in March 1929. Boone was awarded Honorable Mention for this watercolor. "Summer Flowers" is a joyous celebration of the best of summer. Colorful flowers of yellow, pink white, and blue spill from a glazed pottery bowl. Boone unified her image by repeating the flower colors in the curtains, the bowls, the wall, the mirror and the tabletop. It is a well thought out design that appears loose and spontaneous.
