A section of the state of Michigan is portrayed as a three dimensional legend or map, seen from the west looking east toward Lake Michigan. Peaks and valleys rise and fall as if seen from the cockpit of an airplane. Thomas Robert Seawell surrounds the intricate, minute lime green municipalities, rolling hills, and quilted farmlands in a deep blue, rendering the Midwestern state even more fantastical, floating as if an alien island in space.
Seawell was a pioneer of the collagraph medium and used it frequently with other techniques, such as aquatint, to create a depth to his works that invited the viewer to peer just a bit closer.
