Description
The town of Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a seaside commune along the west coast of France, a place Lepere frequently depicted in both prints and paintings. Here, he etches a sunny afternoon with townspeople preparing for a fair. In the background the peak of a circus tent can be seen, its flag flying above a row of caravans suggesting a traveling theater or circus, with one sporting a drum tied to its top.
The town still frequently holds fairs, including a children’s festival and a spring festival. Saint-Jean-de-Monts honored Auguste Lepere and the artist Charles Milcendeau with a sculpture of birds, placed along the beachside boardwalk.
