Elizabeth O'Neil Verner's print of old oaks draped in Spanish moss pays homage to her home and early life, and the vestages of plantation culture. Raised in Charleston, S.C., Verner studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Anschutz.
She taught herself the art of Japanese printing techniques, and took up etching in 1923. By the 1930s Verner had established herself as one of Charleston's leading cultural figures, highlighting the daily life and beauty of South Carolina's Low Country in pastels, block prints and, as shown here, in etching.
