Description

Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth uses a dark, nearly monochromatic palette to effectively depict a nocturnal winter walk, illuminated by the faint glow of a lantern. Two figures bend into a bracing wind, clutching their coats close as darkness envelopes the world around them. Kalckreuth employs pointillism to create a dramatic gradation of shadow and light, as well as black ink on a dark teal that barely surfaces through the gloom, forcing the viewer to feel as though they, too, are peering into the darkness with the central figures.
