Van Hoesen created many portraits of animals and perhaps her most noted portraits are of the rabbit, "Sally," and the rooster, "Boris," which were colored a la poupee. "Wendy" is one of four prints of Dalmatian dogs and is witness to the artist’s mastery of line in creating volume and depth. Besides sparse lines, Van Hoesen was curious about patterns found in textiles and nature so the spots on the white Dalmation were irresistible.
