Description
This color aquatint by Gustave Singier was printed by the Museé Louvre Chalcographie in Paris, which owns the plate. The Chalcographie was established in 1797 by Louis XIV in order "to promote the art of printmaking and to continue the story" by collecting intaglio plates and reprinting them in for sale to the general public without limiting the edition. The collection of plates now numbers over 13,000 many of which can be ordered on the Louvre website: http://www.chalcographiedulouvre.com/html/2b/accueil/index.html This impression was printed by the Chalcographie from the original plate and is a less expensive way for a beginning collector to buy an original print by a noted printmaker, though not printed under his/her supervision.
