Description
This impression is an artist's proof, a state proof before the background block and the wood block that the carpenter is sawing were added. In this impression the tools are in dark blue, they will be found in other colors. This state is quite dramatic and abstracted, the figure appears to be in motion - in stark contrast to the inanimate tools. Packard liked this proof enought to sign it, before adding the additional blocks and colors. The final proof was used in the exhibition "At Work, The Art of California Labor", which was originated by the California Historical Society and the San Francisco State University and curated by Mark Dean Johnson, Director, Fine Arts Gallery, San Francisco State University.
