Description
This small, mixed media drawing by Max Slevogt depicts a war, perhaps mythic, perhaps real. A figure that appears to be of some royalty, is tied to a metal grid over a fire pit as an army with Viking helmets observe the torture. This might also be a funeral pyre for a fallen comrade. Slevogt's major work was a crucifixion mural "Gogatha" at the peace church in Ludwighafen, Germany, painted at the end of his life. He also explored the legend of Siegfried and other German mythology. This quite likely is one of numerous drawings exploring those subjects.
