Known primarily for his graphic art illustrations of animals, especially dogs, Dennis was a fine renderer on the plate, as well. His ability to capture the mood and character of an animal is made clear in this image of two terriers in a convertible, eagerly anticipating a new adventure. The prolific illustrator, who is also known for his watercolor landscapes of his adopted Floridian home, fell into the art of animal rendering when he sent out an etching of his Airedale, Bozo, as a Christmas card to his friends; he was subsequently contacted by a friend with a Scribner’s contact, and the rest is history.
Among his larger projects, Dennis was hired by the American Kennel Club in 1954 to illustrate Pure Breeds: The History and Identifying Characteristics of All Pedigreed Dogs Recognized by the American Kennel Club
