This linear, abstract image by Bong Tae Kim is symmetrical, it reads the same, up or down, and contains many optical illusions.

The structures in Kim’s work come in part from the linear folded bands that have alternating space which appeared in Kim’s early work, reflecting the Korean “Han” philosophy of non-dualism and non-substantialism.

“Han” philosophy is non-orientable, in a manner akin to old Korean coins where there is no front or back; or akin to the traditional Korean trousers which also have no front or back. Kim perceives the idea is very much related to his alternating space present in these compositions.

Art Critic Susan Larsen wrote “a visit to Kim’s studio suggests the origins of his work. Shaped canvases of several years ago, beautifully crafted etched plates like pieces of low relief sculpture.”
