Description
Steinlen concentrated on portraying the working class at the early part of the 20th century. This lithograph shows a group of miners, leaving work. One carries a pick axe and all are in the dark with a small shaft of light illuminating drawn faces. This print is in many museums and publications.
This impression does not have the text line beneath the image at the left and is pencil signed. On the verso is the collector's stamp of San Francisco collector Alexis Pencovic (Lugt 4000), who was found to have added signatures, etc. to a number of Haden prints. The signature on this impression may or may not be real, but the image is.
