"Variations on a Head I' is from a series of experimental lithographs, drawn on the stone, printed and then transferred to another stone and reworked. Oliveira was taken by the works of Redon, Carriere and Munch, all of whom used black as a surround and allowed the figure to emerge from the dark to the light.
