Medical doctor - printmaker Joseph Goldyne pays tribute to the fabled tulip in this ethereal, large-format color lithograph. The editioned printing of 'Three Tulips, Three Pots' used 18 colors and 10 aluminum plates and was done in 10 color states. This impression is an early proof with some color pencil added.
Noted in the Garver catalogue entry regarding this image: "This was Goldyne's first offset lithograph. The image was drawn on 18 registered plates, from which plates were made by contacting the drawings to the light sensitive plates. The plates were printed over a number of weeks on a Steinmesse and Stolberg reproofing press."
Throughout his career, Goldyne has made editioned prints, but his attention has been focused on the unique impression as opposed to the production of editions. For that reason, most of his prints are proofs and very few are editioned. The artist's editioned prints were presented in 2001 in the exhibition "Selected Prints", Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC, October 6, 2001 December 17, 2001. Since 1985, Joseph Goldyne has created a number of livres d'artiste, working with printer and designers Andrew Hoyem, Peter Koch and Wesley Tanner among others.
