Jean Richardson uses the velvety qualities of the aquatint technique to produce a mysterious, atmospheric composition in which two horses and their riders cross a flat plain toward the viewer, a desert mesa rising behind them. Wrapped in thick blankets, the riders may be indigenous peoples returning from a ceremony, or are on a journey to a warmer climate as winter approaches.
Richardson frequently depicts horses in her work, as both a literal and figurative symbol of the human desire for freedom and connection to the earth. She currently lives and works in Oklahoma.
