After finishing his 13 image series "La Saison des Amours" in 1949 Friedlaender created a series of 9 (3 x 3) etchings between 1949 and 1950, titled "Couples." These were not editioned and were only proved at the time.
This semi erotic series was later published by Editeur Touchstone, New York in 1967 in a portfolio titled "Trois Couples." It was printed in an edition of 100 plus a special edition of 10 impressions with added plate tone.
Friedlaender's work became increasingly abstract and became non-objective in the early 1960s.
