Description
In 1921 Roth traveled to Spain and did a series of 16 etchings which are sometimes referred to as the 'Spanish Series', of which this image is number 14, from Segovia. This etching is a perfect illustration of what Whitmore calls Roth's "judicious manipulation of contrasts," with the foreground in the boldest of lines, while the distant view of Segovia itself is rendered in the finest of drypoint. The city appears almost as a dream in the distance. The etching is pencil signed as well as having Roth's signature in the lower right hand corner of the plate.
