Description

The artist signed and titled this piece in a red ink, which has faded over time, making the title illegible. While it is not dated, it is assumed that the piece was executed in New Orleans not long after Callatay moved there in 1960.

The woodcut features a Flambeaux torchbearer: one who lights the way of the Mardi Gras float parade, whose tradition dates back to Mistick Krewe of Comus' first Fat Tuesday celebration in 1857.
