An image of the Catalan city of Girona, Spain, crowned by the Girona Cathedral (also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona). In this image, the Catalan Gothic structure and its 18th century bell tower are surrounded by a city made up primarily of medieval apartments, resting along the Onyar River. John Taylor Arms has added a network of clouds in the far distance to suggest a storm approaching, but that has not stopped residents of the apartments from stringing their linens along the building facades, taking advantage of the sunny afternoon.
Girona (Spanish: Gerona) has a long and complex political and religious history, and is noted for having endured twenty-five sieges and seven captures. It still retains part of its medieval fortifications, and features one of the best preserved Jewish Quarters in Europe.
