"The Ameya" portrays a candymaker surrounded by observers on a busy street in Japan. He employs a technique similar to glass blowing to achieve a similar, delicate aesthetic. "The Ameya"--also known as "Itinerant Candy Vendor"--oil painting by Robert Frederick Blum (American/OH: 1957 - 1903) was executed in 1893, after a trip Blum took to Japan to create illustrations on comission by Scribner's Magazine. This photomechanical print with hand-coloring was done not long after Blum's death, though the artist who so skillfully applied the color, possibly in gouache or watercolor, remains anonymous.
