Description
This is likely a view of the riverside neighborhood of Zaanse Schans, in Zaandam, Holland. It was a central port during the Industrial Revolution up through the early 20th century, but its roots in international trade extend to the 16th century. By the mid 1600s, up to 900 windmills coud be found along the river Zaan. It is currently a major historic district, housing eight of its original windmills, whose uses once ranged from dye production to paper milling.
