This was done by the artist after his own painting, done in 1958, of the same name. It was likely reproduced by him to illustrate a posthumously printed novel by the famed Russian author Anton Chekhov. Some delicate details have been removed to accommodate a reproductive medium (such as the texture of snow), while other details have been added (in the painting, the author does not carry a cane).
