Description
Ajijic is a small town in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, situated about three miles from Lake Chapala. Featuring a temperate climate and a lushly vegetated landscape, it became a magnet for American and Canadian artists and expats in the late 1890s, and remains a tourist and retirement destination today. This image, losely translated as "Spinning with Winch", was created by one such artist, Ohio-born, first generation Italian American Rafael Greno. As with many foreign artists, he depicted a traditional weaver in Ajijic, weaving being one of the central forms of commerce in the region.
