William Seltzer Rice's subject for this color woodcut is a small dinghy with the wind catching its orange sail as it maneuvers between wooden piers in San Francisco Bay.
W. S. Rice moved to Alameda, California near Oakland in 1910 to teach high school art, as well as teaching at the California School of Arts and Crafts. Rice found inspiration in the Oakland section of the San Francisco Bay and its direct surrounding. He "painted" the ink onto the blocks using a brush, the brushstrokes creating a dynamic sensation to the composition.
Individual impressions of this image will vary in color, in reality these works might be considered 'monoprint' and were not formally editioned.
