Description
The Marienplatz (Mary's Square) was established in the year 1158. The structures decpicted include the Frauenkirche (background), with its famous domed towers designed after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem--which itself was designed to echo Byzantine style. In the foreground, right, is the Neues Rathaus, or the New Town Hall. The column, known as Mariensaule (Mary's Column) was erected to celebrate the end of the Swedish occupation in 1638.
