Description
Mark Tumin was a member of the Hermitage Group, founded in 1969 in Moscow by eight artists. In quiet defiance of the Soviet regime, the artists met informally in the library of the Hermitage Museum to study the works of Old Masters and other non-sanctioned genres essentially banned in the Soviet Union. This piece, a loose and graceful sketch portrait, was done around the time that Tumin began teaching in the United States, having only recently been allowed to exhibit and sell his works outside of Russia.
